Roosevelt Smith, 71, of Gilbert, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, January 15, 2009, from St. Mary's Medical Center at Huntington.
Born at Gilbert on August 5, 1937, he was the son of the late Willie and Mable (Belcher) Smith.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 25 years, Cleo (Hatfield) Smith; two brothers: Denver Ray and Dennis Smith; and one sister, Barbara Sue Smith.
Roosevelt was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in Korea, and a retired coal miner. He was a dedicated member of the Browning Fork House of Prayer at Browning Fork.
Those left to love and cherish the memory of Roosevelt are: his son, Ronald (Tina) Smith of Jasper, Alabama; his daughter, Vivian (David) Carter of Gilbert; his four grandsons: Peyton, Nathaniel, and Jadon Smith of Jasper, Alabama, and Justin Carter of Gilbert; his three brothers: Willie (Ella) Smith, Jr., of Ocala Florida, Ishmeal (Shirley) Smith of Gallipolis Ohio, and Timothy (Minnie Mae) Smith of Gilbert; his five sisters: Ann (Curtis) White of Austin Indiana, Carlyn Sue (Adrian) Duesler of Aurora Illinois, Dara Jean (Maurice) DesRoisers of Mooresville North Carolina, Gloria "Deb" Cline of Hanover, and Tina (Dennis) Cook of Mooresville North Carolina; and a host of other dear family and friends.
Friends called at the Freedom Full Gospel Assembly House of Prayer at Hampden on Saturday, January 17th from 6 to 9 pm for a celebration of Roosevelt's life.
Funeral services were held at 12 noon on Sunday, January 18th at the church with the Rev. Diamond Carter and the Rev. Lowell Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Varney Cemetery at Varney.
Military grave rite services were presented by the Disable American Veterans Chapter #141 Belfrey Kentucky.
He was carried to his final resting place by family and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Browning Fork House of Faith at HC 72 Box 153, Gilbert, WV. 25621.
